The group of youths had their hoods up and were talking to the victim outside a pub in Leicester.
But they then pushed him against a wall and one member of the gang repeatedly stabbed him in the leg.
The group then walked off and the injured man hobbled away before another scuffle broke out.
He was later seen pulling his trousers down to assess his injuries and was accompanied by a friend.
Police have not made any arrests and are appealing for witnesses.
Cameras from The Fountain pub, which overlooks Hill Street where the incident took place, captured it on CCTV.
Ann Brennan, owner of the pub, said: ‘I was working when I saw a crowd of guys, youths with hoodies on, outside.
‘Then someone came in and said they wanted to ring 999, that somebody had been stabbed.
‘He had a hoodie on and I didn’t want any trouble, I said it wasn’t anything to do with the pub and asked him to leave.
He was seen limping after being stabbed in the leg four times and later pulled down his trousers to examine his injuries
‘The next thing I saw was a guy outside taking his trousers down, then the police arrived and all of a sudden nobody could come in and everyone had to be escorted out.
‘The police explained what was going on, they were really good.’
After police arrived, they took a look at the pub’s CCTV and Ms Brennan saw the man appear to be stabbed four times.
The footage shows a group of men, including the victim, walking into Hill Street from Humberstone Gate at around 6.30pm on Saturday night.
Police closed Hill Street and parts of Humberstone Gate last night after the incident.
The force is now investigating and the victim remains in hospital, although his injuries are not life-threatening.
A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: ‘Officers were called last night to reports of an injured man in Hill Street at 6.50pm.
‘A 30-year-old man was found with what appeared to be a stab wound on his left leg.
‘His bag had been taken during the incident. He was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary where he remains. His injuries are not life threatening.’
